What if paying taxes wasn’t just a civic duty, but part of obedience to God?

In Romans 13, Paul says, “custom to whom custom,” tying tolls, fees, and taxes directly to our obedience to the Lord.

In a culture pushing ever-bigger government and so-called “equity,” how do Christians submit to authority without betraying Scripture?

Stay with me as we unpack when paying taxes is obedience to God—and when government steps into theft.

In this episode, Pastor Brian Noble explores Romans 13 and what it means to render “custom to whom custom,” showing that taxes, tolls, and regulatory fees are part of a Christian’s obedience when government stays within its God-given role. It explains the difference between direct taxes and customs on goods and trade, arguing for limited, just taxation that funds punishing evil and shared essentials like roads and basic services. The message emphasizes willing submission to governing authorities—up to the point where obedience to man would mean disobedience to God. It challenges ideas of wealth redistribution as “equity,” calling Christians to be the most obedient citizens on earth, unless the state commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands.
